APAKAH ITU KANKER PARU-PARU?

Kanker paru-paru berasal dari jaringan tipis paru-paru, pada umumnya berupa lapisan sel yang terletak pada saluran udara. Dua tipe utama kanker ini adalah kanker paru-paru sel kecil (SCLC) dan kanker paru-paru non-sel kecil (NSCLC). Tipe-tipe ini didiagnosa berdasarkan bentuk sel yang terlihat di bawah mikroskop. Lebih dari 80% kanker paru-paru merupakan tipe kanker paru-paru non-sel kecil. Tiga sub-tipe utama dari kanker paru-paru non-sel kecil adalah adenokarsinoma, karsinoma sel skuamosa dan karsinoma sel besar.

Kanker paru-paru merupakan kanker paling umum kedua yang diidap pria dan kanker paling umum ketiga yang diidap wanita di Singapura. Pria memiliki resiko kanker paru-paru 3 kali lebih tinggi dari wanita. Dari 3 kelompok etnis utama, etnis Cina memiliki resiko tertinggi, yang diikuti oleh etnis Melayu dan India.
